Caring for Painted MDF Doors.
Cleaning and General Care.
- Regular Dusting: Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to dust regularly and prevent particle build-up.
- Prompt Spill Clean up: Wipe up any cooking splashes, spills, or condensation immediately with a damp cloth, then dry the area thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. MDF is highly susceptible to water damage if moisture seeps into the material or seams.
- Gentle Cleaning: For general cleaning, use a mild solution of warm water and a few drops of non-abrasive dish soap (1 part soap to 99 parts water is a common manufacturer recommendation). Dampen a soft cloth with the solution, wipe the surface gently, and then dry it immediately with a separate, lint-free cloth to prevent streaks.
- Hardware: Clean around knobs and handles, which are high-touch areas, using the same mild solution and a soft cloth, or a soft toothbrush for crevices.
Products to Avoid
Never use the following on painted MDF doors, as they can damage the finish or cause discoloration:
- Abrasive cleaners, cloths, or sponges (e.g., scouring pads, steel wool, magic erasers)
- Harsh chemicals (e.g., bleach, ammonia, solvents, white spirit)
- Vinegar-based detergents (except for targeted use on grease, and always tested on an inconspicuous area first)
- Wax- or oil-based furniture polishes
- Alcohol-based cleaners
Maintenance and repair.
- Address damage promptly: If you notice any lifting, bubbles, or nicks, repair them immediately to prevent moisture or heat from causing further damage.
- Maintain Vulnerable points: All Panels, Posts or any furniture touching the floor should be considered a vulnerable point, and extra care should be taken when using a floor mop. If there is a spillage, then it should be dealt with immediately to avoid water ingress. These vulnerable points should be sealed for extra protection. Silicone and Sealants can perish over time, and will need to be re-applied as part of the on going kitchen maintenance.
- Avoid excessive heat: Do not open dishwasher doors until the cycle has finished fully, and the cavity has dried and cooled down. Do not leave oven door open, for long periods of time during cooking. Do not use high heat generating appliances like kettles, toasters air fryers etc. under kitchen furniture. Not following the above guidance can cause your kitchen products to crack, warp, swell or peel.
- Ventilation: To avoid any adverse effect to your kitchen products, a well ventilated room in recommended. Always use your cooker extractor whilst cooking, and open windows or doors to remove surplus moisture when needed.
- Limit direct sun: Painted MDF finishes can change colour when exposed to sun light, and humidity – the intensity of exposure will affect the rate of change. This is an inevitable feature of Painted MDF products. Because of this, any replacement doors required at any point in the future, may not be an exact match. Although they can age/blend in better over time.
- Regular Inspection and Touch-ups: Periodically inspect your doors for chips, cracks, or wear, especially around high-touch areas and edges. Touch up damaged paint with a small paintbrush and matching touch up paint to prevent further deterioration.
